Via Riscatto in Matera is a street that evokes history and tradition, representing a fascinating corner of this city rich in culture. The name “Riscatto” comes from a crucial period in the history of Matera, when the city went through a process of recovery and rebirth, regaining its splendor after years of economic and social hardship.

A short distance from the Cathedral of Matera, there is “via Riscatto”, which recalls a dark episode in the city’s history. Here, on the evening of December 29, 1514, Count Giancarlo Tramontano was assassinated, a tyrant whose oppressive government and high taxes had caused great discontent among the population. Tired of the abuses, the people of Matera planned his revenge during vespers, surprising him and killing him near the cathedral. The event is commemorated by a plaque in the Church of San Giovanni Battista. Despite the legends, the culprits were never identified, and a few months later the city received a pardon. Today, via Riscatto is a charming street frequented by tourists, also inspiring TV series and cinema.
